Hitachi camera......................?

I just brought a Hitachi hdc- 1097E digital camera with 10MP. The problem is, when its in video mode, it zooms in, but when its recording , the zoom on does not zoom and so i cant film objects at close-ups. Please help me solve this problem as I cannot return or sell the item!
