How long does a team have rights to a would be free agent? Explanation inside...?

Like, say the Rays don't want to deal Carl Crawford at the deadline because they're contending... If they were to get eliminated in the division series (or at any point eliminted after July 31st) would they be able to trade him at some point or do they no longer have any rights to him and he would become a free agent?
